What was most amazing about all of this was that I didn’t REALIZE how important basketball was to me before that. Sure, I played with my friends sometimes and would shoot around on my driveway when I felt like it, but that was it.
How could something so “casual” affect me so much?
I still couldn't tell you the exact reason today if you asked me, but at that point in time, I knew what NEEDED to be done..
So, wiping the tears away and blasting some motivational music (probably “Eminem – Sing For The Moment” at that time), I sat down at my desk, pulled out a piece of paper and wrote down EXACTLY what I was going to do.

So, there it was.
Even though I had just been cut from the measly 8th grade basketball team, I set goals for myself to:
Make the 9th grade team the next year
Make the Varsity team after that (and STAR on that team)
And then on top of that.. PLAY COLLEGE BASKETBALL!
I was clearly the “dreamer” personality type and if you have HUGE goals like this too, you probably have that same “dreamer” mentality too, like me.
So, back to where we started: Freshmen Tryouts (the first goal on my list).
After getting cut from the 8th grade team, I had spent the previous year by playing a ton of basketball and training really hard, for hours on end. Some days I'd go for as long as 8 or 10 hours.
Out of sheer effort, I had made some minor improvements and knew I had at least had a small chance to make the team.
So tryouts came around and..
I MADE the team.
Instead of running home to hide in my room this time..
..I ran home, screaming in a frenzy of EXCITEMENT and HAPPINESS.. I couldn’t wait to tell my mom and dad and brother and sister and all my friends! it was really cool..
That excitement didn’t last long though because I spent the rest of the year riding the bench, only getting in when we were crushing the other team, or down by 30 points. But still, I had reached that first goal of mine and once the season ended, it was time to go back to work and REALLY figure out how to make this happen.
Now, I could tell you every little detail about what happened for my final 3 years in high-school and after or instead, I can just tell you about the 2 most important parts:
1. By the time high-school ended, I had become a DOMINANT point guard in my area.
I had crossovers that put dudes on their ass.
I had hesitation moves that made everyone in the gym put their fist in front of their mouth and go, “Dammmmnnnn”.
And I had a dirty, little spin move combination that simply made people WATCH and stare every time.
I don’t mean to be cocky here (well, maybe I do), but my handles were insane.
How insane? I actually have a video to show you that you’re gonna love, but before I do, here’s the second juicy detail:
2. I made it to college basketball. Crazy, right?
I actually DID IT. If you could see my face right now as I write this to you, you’d see a huge, happy SMILE across it, just reminiscing about it all

Well, during that “transformation” time, I spent A LOT of time studying basketball training, specifically dribbling.
